May 2025

Editorial

As we step into May 2025, global supply chains continue to face a volatile mix of demand surges, shifting trade policies, and evolving consumer expectations. This month’s newsletter explores how freight, fulfillment, and manufacturing sectors are responding to this turbulence by adapting strategies, investing in automation, and making hard operational choices.

In global freight, renewed demand across the Transpacific, particularly on routes out of China, has overwhelmed carriers, causing capacity shortages and driving up rates. The ripple effects of U.S. trade policy, especially revised port fees targeting Chinese maritime assets, are beginning to reshape pricing and route decisions. Carriers like Maersk and logistics providers such as DHL and C.H. Robinson are reporting sharp shifts in traffic patterns, while projections for global container growth have dipped into negative territory. The freight sector is clearly in recalibration mode.

Fulfillment is under pressure from both expansion and contraction. While automation and micro-fulfillment centres are on the rise, as seen in Kroger and Ocado’s rollout of new high-tech facilities, other players such as Saks Global are consolidating operations and closing warehouses. The contrasting stories reflect an industry grappling with the cost of e-commerce evolution and the need for highly agile logistics networks. Global firms like DHL and Fulfilmentcrowd are focusing on strategic acquisitions and international growth, while others are reducing overheads and rethinking scale.

Manufacturing shows a similarly uneven landscape. Both the U.S. and China report contracting PMI figures, driven by weakened demand and uncertainty around tariffs. Yet innovation persists. TSMC is expanding its chip design footprint in Europe, and MIT is advancing a new manufacturing initiative to strengthen U.S. industrial capability. India is also making headlines with a landmark Airbus-Tata helicopter assembly facility.

The message is clear: supply chains are transforming, but not in unison. Agility, investment, and policy awareness are critical to staying ahead.
